I had one of those moments recently where you would end up at a particular website, and you’re not sure how you got there. Luckily, this site ignited some nostalgic memories.
Late last month, Archive.org released all three seasons of Liquid Television online. Now comes the most challenging part, trying to explain Liquid TV to someone who is unaware of this artistic masterpiece. Per Wikipedia:
Liquid Television is an animation showcase that appeared on MTV and Cartoon Network (later Adult Swim)…. MTV commissioned three seasons of the show, which was produced by Hanna-Barbera, Martin Cartoons and Colossal Pictures. It has served as the launching point for several high-profile original cartoons, including Beavis and Butt-head and Æon Flux.
So many wonderful things came from this late night animation and puppet variety show. They Might Be Giants just didn’t start on Tiny Toons. Adult Swim had strong influences from Liquid Television as it commissioned independent artists the ability to showcase their work.
Music licensing has kept Liquid Television off home release for years so there might be a chance that this gets whacked with a takedown notice. Enjoy it while you can.
For those who didn’t know, there was also a 2013 revival of the series.
